History of the Run Around Woman Plus, Longville, Minnesota
In 1997, The Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce revived an 18 mile/30k race which had been known as the Run Around Woman. This event was originally started by Roger and Nancy Mustonen some 15 years earlier. The new Run Around Woman ALke Plus as it was now called, involved the original 18 mile or 30 K race around Woman Lake, but now began on the south side of Longville, MN on State Highway 84 and concluded on the west side of Longville, MN near the Chamber of Commerce Information Building on mainstreet. The new event also incorporated a 5 mile run and a 5 mile walk which started at the Chamber of Commerce Information Building, proceeded west on Cass County Road 5 two and one half miles and then back to the Information Building.
The 30K portion of the new Run Around Woman Lake Plus race meandered around beautiful Woman Lake, of The Woman Lake Chain of Lakes, from which the name of the race was taken, on blacktop state and county roads. The race proceeded south on State Highway 84 six miles to the intersection of state highway 84 and Cass County Road 11 at the Mule Lake Store. It then proceeded west on Cass County Road 11 about five miles to the intersection of highway 11 and Cass County Road five. The race then proceeded on Cass County Road 5 into downtown Longville. For many serious runners, the sanctioned and certified 30 K race was used as a tune-up for Grandma?s Marathon Race in June.
While the RAW Race was governed by the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce, it was produced by a committee of about 15 individuals and nearly 100 volunteers. The new event was headed by Tom Dollins, owner of Arrowhead Builders Supply.
The 30 K race began at 9 a.m. on the first Saturday of May. The five mile run and walk started fifteen minutes later. The races concluded with an awards ceremony at the Longville Elementary School cafeteria at about 1 p.m.
The 30K race had twelve divisions for both men and women and seven divisions for both men and women in the 5 mile run and 5 mile walk. Each registrant received a commemorative tee shirt. They also received a bag of gifts and coupons from Longville businesses.
There were seven aid stations for the 30K runners and two aid stations along the route for the 5 mile run and 5 mile walk participants. Many of the aid stations were sponsored and conducted by Longville businesses.
Participants who finished their respective races each received a commemorative medal that was sponsored by a business.
The evening before the race, the Young At Heart Senior Club sponsored a spaghetti dinner for race participants and the public in Longville, Minnesota.
On May 6, 2006, the Longville Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the Ninth Annual Run Around Woman Lake Plus Race. It is hoped that the race will continue for many more years.
